Ohio Amish Country Bed and Breakfast Recipe Buttermilk Syrup

The Barn Inn, a bed and breakfast in Ohio Amish Country, has discovered a wonderful recipe for Buttermilk Syrup. A sure winner, we serve it over our hot oatmeal pancakes.

Buttermilk Syrup

Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 tbsp corn syrup
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:
In a saucepan, stir together the sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup, and baking soda. Bring to a boil and cook for 7 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Serve over hot pancakes!

In our haste to get our breakfast ready for our guests, we accidently overcooked the syrup; however, it wasn't a big error because; we discovered, if cooked a little longer, it turns into a wonderful caramel sauce as well!
